Ever wonder what the sticky, white film on your child’s teeth is and how to get it off? Well this is called dental plaque! Plaque is a naturally occurring film on our teeth that is constantly forming. While we cannot stop the formation of dental plaque, we can remove it at home with good brushing and flossing habits. Not effectively removing dental plaque can cause cavities and gum disease, so it’s important to start healthy oral care habits at an early age.
When plaque is left on our teeth and hardens due to the minerals in our saliva, this forms calculus, or better known as tartar. While tartar is removable, it can only be removed by a dental professional with special instruments. The formation of tartar is very normal, but we can slow the progression of formation by effectively removing plaque on our teeth at least twice daily with brushing and daily flossing.
